NEW LAWS REGARDING
PLAYGROUND EQUIPMENT

by John R. MacDowell, Esq. New legislation, effective January 1, 2000, affects associations which maintain playgrounds. The law, Health and Safety Code Section 115730, has regulated playgrounds and playground equipment for years. The new change, however, requires that playgrounds be inspected, and upgraded, as necessary, within specified time frames. Regulations Health and Safety Code Section 115725 requires the State of California to establish regulations for the design, installation and maintenance of playgrounds and playground equipment. Federal standards already exist, in the form of the Handbook for Public Playground Safety.
